With applications of light as its center of research and development, the Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) is focused on photonics as the most promising key technology of the 21st century. On both, national and international levels, photonic technology is regarded as the major driving force of innovation and expected to push forward the frontiers of science and technology in the fields of information, communication, security, materials, life sciences, and health.

Since its foundation in 1992, the IPHT has performed top-rank research and development receiving worldwide appreciation. Its present concentration on photonic technology aims at strengthening its existing scientific and technological competences and to expand into new areas of modern optics. Our ambitious goal is to be among the world’s leading developers of photonic technology and its applications.

The two new research divisions Photonic Instrumentation and Optical Fibers and Fiber Applications dispose of around 200 coworkers. They are active in innovative solutions tailored to practical requirements. They do not only develop innovative scientific and technological concepts, but also transfer these concepts into novel components and instruments in cooperation with many industrial and academic partners.
