Department of Optical Fiber Modules

Passive and active fiber-optic modules based on special optical fibers of widely varied composition and geometry are key constituents of many photonic systems in communications and information technology. To fabricate and qualify the fiber-optic or micro-optic components of such modules, we use high-resolution electron and laser lithography and other optical structuring techniques as well as specially tailored assembly and connection procedures and many specific characterization methods.

Research Topics

  • design and test of passive and active fiber modules, fiber laser systems
  • optical fiber Bragg grating sensor elements
  • innovative effects in compact and micro-structured optical fibers
  • optical micro- and nanostructures
  • development of methods for the characterisation of optical fibers and fiber components
