The Institute of Photonic Technology

The Institute of Photonic Technology e.V. (IPHT) researches and develops photonic processes and systems of the highest sensitivity, efficiency, and resolution – from the basics to applications in biophotonics, fiber optics, and photonic detection. It is supported by a strong basis in microtechnology, nanotechnology, and fiber technology and focuses on answers to important questions in the areas of health, safety, energy, and the environment. Following IPHT’s main theme “From Ideas to Instruments” applied fundamental research into understanding the interaction of light and matter is translated into methods, instrumental concepts, and laboratory prototypes. The synergistic linkage of these three applied research focuses is an important requirement for the sustainability of the Institute. IPHT is well integrated into the regional, national, and international research landscape and closely connected to the research and teachings being pursued at the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) at Jena.
